How to warp and curve text in Silhouette Studio (Basic vs Designer Edition)

Silhouette Studio has more ways to bend text than Cricut Design Space, but which ones you get depends on your edition. Here is what each edition can do, and what to do when yours cannot.

Basic edition (free): Text to Path

The free edition curves text along a shape but cannot warp it.

1. Draw the shape you want the text to follow, usually a circle or an arc.
2. Type your text with the Text tool, then double-click it to enter edit mode.
3. A small control point appears at the left of the text. Drag that point onto the edge of the shape. The text snaps to the path.
4. Slide the control point along the path to move the text; drag the small vertical slider to sit the text above or below the line.
5. Delete or hide the guide shape before cutting.

This produces an arc with rotated letters. It cannot make an arch with upright letters, a wave, or a bulge.

Designer Edition and higher: the Warp panel

Available in version 4.1 or later with Designer Edition, Designer Edition Plus or Business Edition.

1. Select the text (convert it to a path first if the panel refuses: right-click → Convert to Path).
2. Open the Warp panel from the right-hand toolbar and click Warp Selected Shapes.
3. A grid with nodes appears over the text. Drag the nodes and handles to stretch and reshape it.
4. Since 4.2, the Warp Templates tab gives one-click arc, flag, wave and bulge shapes with a strength slider.

The Conical Warp tool in the same family is what you want for tapered tumblers: it bends a design so it sits straight once wrapped around a cone.

Importing curved text: the SVG rule

This is the part that catches people. The Basic edition cannot open SVG files. SVG import is a Designer Edition feature. Basic edition users can import DXF, or trace a PNG.

• Designer Edition or higher: File → Open, choose the SVG. It arrives already outlined, with each fill color as its own layer, sized in inches. Ungroup if you need to move colors separately.
• Basic edition: import a PNG at high resolution, then Trace → Select Trace Area → Trace. A solid black design traces cleanly. A DXF export is coming to the generator below and will import directly.

The generator below writes an SVG with the text already converted to paths and the width set in inches, so Designer Edition opens it at size with nothing left to fix.
